National Geographic Map Machine
An interactive map lets you zoom in and out on any country in the globe, and the map you get is printable. Fast, but the maps lack detail.

Expedia Maps & Directions
Detailed maps down to street level for the USA, plus road maps of Canada, Mexico and Europe. The maps are elegant and fast loading. There are options to save the map you are currently viewing, or print it, or email it. A clever dialogue lets you zoom in and out, or move the current view in any direction.

MapQuest
The maps section allows the user to select a country then zoom down to levels of impressive detail down to street level (in some countries). A travel directions utility can quickly give you a detailed route between any two cities in the USA, Canada or Mexico, and also most European cities. Also has topographic maps for the USA.

Perry-Castaneda Map Collection
This famous site provides copyright-free maps of most countries of the world. (These are simply images, and are not interactive.) As well as contemporary maps, there is an excellent collection of historical maps from classical times onwards. Some of the image files are huge. Of the external links listed, the page of links to modern city maps is the most impressive.

A utility that lets you view overhead imagery for countries all over the world via a clickable map. The images come from aerial photography and satellites (some of them from Soviet spy satellites) and are all in black and white.
