Business Directories

AllBusiness.com Directory
This takes the idea of a an all-encompassing resource one step further - though it is not clear from the opening page, this is an international business directory, and it claims to be the most comprehensive in the world. Its ambitious aim is to consolidate all the world's businesses into one single searchable resource. You might think that this would result in a directory too large to be useful, but narrowing down a search is surprisingly easy. For example, the result of searching on a term like 'Adventure Tour' is not a list of results, but an option to search by specific country for the category the database selects for you. Choosing 'New Zealand' then gives the names of about forty NZ adventure tour companies, all with links to their web sites. Though there are some glitches in the system, this is a very impressive directory.

Webster's Online Business Directory
This is a heavily promoted site in which all companies listed have paid for their placing, and more for a ranking near the top of the list. This means that entries in specialist areas are limited, especially for non-US companies. Information listed includes a company profile, industrial classification code, and web site link.

World Pages.com
This is a meta list of international business directories - a simple country selection dialogue lets you see all the business directories available online for any country in the world. The listings seem to be limited to about five per country, as most have the same number available.

The University of Kansas International Business Resource Connection
This is an unusual business resource which was designed to help small and medium sized businesses find trade opportunities worldwide. It has become the most comprehensive collection of international trade links on the Internet. Its Country Resources section has a clickable map of the regions of the world which lets you home in on a country of interest and then browse the relevant listings which cover business and government sites, travel help and other informational links. The focus throughout is on finding markets for products, and the first item in an excellent FAQ describes how to use the site to do this.
